A celebration of singing together

At Swara Tharangini, we strive to nurture the rich tradition of bhajan singing among students. Through our events, we foster unity, joy, and a deep connection to music—contributing to the preservation of India’s cultural heritage.

The Art of Living – Coimbatore Chapter’s initiative Swara Tharangini, an inter-school Bhajan singing competition. The event seeks to inspire young minds to embrace bhajan singing, imbibe India’s rich traditions and culture, and experience the joy of singing together in a spirit of unity.

“The word Bhajan is very precious. Bhaj means to share—sharing all that the Divine is. Singing brings serenity; it is a gentle merging into sound, floating on its waves with a deep sense of contentment and meditation.”
— Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
Several scientific studies have highlighted the benefits of group singing. Research shows that group singing helps balance both the left and right hemispheres of the brain, activates the respiratory system, and improves oxygenation.
Studies have also found that singers exhibit higher levels of Immunoglobulin A, an antibody that helps strengthen the immune system, while merely listening to music reduces stress but does not stimulate immunity in the same way. Findings from the IBSA Foundation for Scientific Research support these benefits.
In addition, a study conducted by the University of California revealed that choir singing reduces cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress, leading to increased positive thoughts and overall satisfaction.
Considering the immense benefits of group bhajan singing, the competition aims to encourage young children to develop the habit of singing bhajans and benefit from this ancient tradition.
The initiative also seeks to create awareness among educational institutions about the power of group singing and encourage them to incorporate this practice within their campuses.
